ASTM A283 grade C is a steel material grade defined in ASTM A283/A283M standard, the American material standard for hot rolled steel plates for general intermediate strength usage.
ASTM A283 grade C equivalent material in JIS standard is JIS G 3101 SS400. Below is the comparison between ASTM A283 grade C equivalent material SS400 and A283 grade C steel.
ASTM A283 grade C equivalent material SS400 and A283 grade C steel chemical composition %:
Grade | C (t≤16mm) | Si | Mn | P | S | Cu |
A283 grade C | 0.24 max | 0.04 max | 0.09 max | 0.035 max | 0.04 max | 0.20 min |
SS400 | - | - | - | 0.50 max | 0.50 max | - |
ASTM A283 grade C equivalent material SS400 and A283 grade C steel mechanical properties:
Grade | Yield strength ReH/(N/mm2) (t≤16mm) min | Tensile strength Rm/(N/mm2) (3mm≤t≤16mm) | Elongation A/%(3mm≤t≤40mm) min |
A283C | 205 | 380-515 | 25 |
SS400 | 245 | 400-500 | 21 |
The chemical composition of SS400 steel is not as strict as that of ASTM A283 grade C steel. But the mechanical properties of SS400 steel is even higher than ASTM A283 grade C steel. The industry insiders always consider SS400 steel as ASTM A283 grade C equivalent material in JIS standard. If you want to use one to replace the other, please get further engineering approval.
