The welding characteristics of SM490A and SS400 steels, using the Gas Shield Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) technique, have been investigated, including the microstructure, mechanical properties, and corrosion behavior. Experimental results show that after multi-pass welding, the affected zone and bottom welding zones have been subjected to a thermal treatment of tempering or normalizing. The unfavorable microstructures, such as Widmanstatten ferrite in these heat affected zone and welding zones, will be eliminated. Therefore, the toughness and hardness of these zones are improved. The result of exhibit higher impact toughness, due to the effect of grain refining. Meanwhile, the alloy’s tensile strength will increase with increasing heat input.
