The good performance of S355J2W corten steel plates has close relation to Cu, P, Cr, Ni etc. chemical composition.

Carbon content affects the steel toughness and weldability. S355J2W corten steel plates are widely used in welding structure, therefore, the carbon content of S355J2W steel is usually controlled within 0.10%. The strength shortage is made up by Nb etc. microalloying elements, so as to enchance the low temperature impact resistant ability of S355J2W corten steel plates.

Copper is the most effective alloy element to improve weather resistance of S355J2W corten steel plates. The Cu content should be controlled within 0.25%-0.45%.

Nickel can improve the melting point of Cu solid solution. If the added Ni is more than half of Cu content in S355J2W corten steel, it can improve the thermal crack caused by Cu during the rolling process.

Though P can obviously improve the corrosion resistance of S355J2W corten steel plates. For the weathering steel of welding structure, it will deteriorate the toughness of steel and reduce the impact capacity of steel at low temperature. S355J2W weathering steel requires an impact resistance at -20℃, so S355J2W steel requires a lower content of P, and the content of P is under 0.020%.
